Hostile Skies by Richard Grantham

A new work aimed at 1st section bands to be recorded by BB De Waldsang  and published by Lake Music (Netherland) in Summer 2006. The inspiration for Hostile Skies came from a newspaper article about the tragic shooting down of an RAF Transport plane in Iraq during 2005. The whole notion of hostile fire and military flight generated a number of ideas that eventually became, after a short gestation period the current piece. A fast, exciting theme gives way under percussive 'fire' to a more reflective middle section which gives soloists themes based around an organic idea harvested from the hymn tune 'Gillam'. Tennyson's words 'crossing the bar' reflect the mood throughout before a return to the idea of flight. A militaristic fugue fights with the main idea before a triumphant resolution and a glorious, triumphant 'fly-past' to finish.
